Jeff Sessions needs to inhale deeply

Ok, Mr. Sessions. I was just reading about the Civil Rights Act of 1964, that outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Since the Attorney General has taken office, he has supported a ban on visas to the U.S. from 6 predominantly Muslim countries, had a "behind closed doors" meeting with an anti - LGBT group saying that religion in the U.S. is "under attack" and thanked them for their "important work."

I refer Mr. Sessions, who is responsible for upholding the law of the land, to his testimony before Congress. When pressed on his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage, the conservative senator told Democratic colleagues that both issues had been settled by the Supreme Court and that he would abide by those decisions.

So what is the truth?

Did he perjure himself during sworn testimony during Congress?

It seems these days that our elected officials are given a lot of leeway when it comes to the "smell test." In other words, their past records and statements are ignored. Whatever they say in testimony in order to get a position is favored instead. Then, once they are in the position and they revert to doing exactly what they have done in the past, their behavior after is given a pass Jeff Sessions voted in the Senate against hate crime bills, the Violence Against Women Act, and Loretta Lynch’s nomination to be attorney general, and he commented that Obama nominees had “ACLU DNA.”

When Jeff Sessions was confirmed as Attorney General, as when Scott Pruitt was confirmed as the head of the EPA, many people compared it to "allowing the fox to guard the hen house."

It seemed like it didn't matter what these two had done for their entire political career.

I have to say now it does. Because of our spineless Congress, we have at least two heads of government departments who are directly opposed to the mission and purpose of their respective departments.

I don't think anyone in our country voted for Donald Trump hoping he would make our air dirtier, our water more polluted, and our health more at risk.

But that is what has happened by these two particular appointees.

Already, coal companies are now allowed to dump toxic sludge into rivers they were previously prevented from doing by regulations passed during the Obama administration. It seems the attitude of the Trump administration is that EVERYTHING President Obama was for needs to be stricken down.

I don't understand the mania for all of this. I don't want to believe it is due to racial prejudice.

I am praying it is not because they don't understand the importance of clean water and clean air.

Then why?

Is it because of money? Profit? Greed?

Has the great system of Capitalism finally eaten itself where money is more valued than human life?

Have we lost all compassion for our fellow man in the interest of making a few more dollars?

I am hoping this country has more compassion and is smarter than the propaganda companies routinely spew in the interest of greater profits. I am hoping the lessons of the past like when big tobacco and Dow Chemical spent enormous sums of money to cover up knowledge they had for decades so it wouldn't hurt their sales is not lost on our citizens.

I am all for Capitalism.

I am all for people getting rich.

Just not at the expense of the health and well being of the vast number of citizens of the United States.
